Katy Perry - Taking One Day at a Time

Spectrum Generations is proud and honored to have Hallowell’s Citizen of the Year, Katy Perry as one of our volunteers.  Katy’s philosophy in life is to take one day at a time and think positively.  Katy states, “As the old fellow said, it’s not for sissies! Be happy with what you have and don’t find fault, it doesn’t do anyone any good, least of all you.”  Katy’s tips for after retirement:  do the things you like to do such as write your life story, take a trip to Panama, research genealogy, take a course at Senior College and find out how much hidden talent you have.  “Simplify your life and give back some of the things that life has given you; volunteer, give money to something you believe in because you can-it’s your money!”

When we asked Katy how she became involved with Spectrum Generations she replied, “Well, because I am old.  There are a lot of people not as fortunate as I am, if I can help with things like Meals on Wheels and supporting a great cause, it seems not only fair but fun to do that sort of thing.  I really believe that what Spectrum Generations and the Cohen Center are doing is building a community where people really look out for each other and have fun.”

As for living the good life, Katy says Just do it!  Do whatever you want to do.  Do not be afraid to say yes to life.  Katy stated, “I had the most remarkable mother and we had nothing and she never complained or found fault.  My brother and I were happy with what we had and we did not know that we didn’t have anything.  You have to learn to be happy with what you’ve got and appreciate it.”

Katy has lived – and continues to live - an amazing life including serving in the Peace Corps stationed in Belize, Central America, written and published 9 books which highlight people and places that have been part of her life, she writes for a local newspaper as well as for a paper in Prince Edward Island and is currently the Hostess for “Our Towns”, a weekly cable (Channel 9) TV show in Augusta.

Way to go, Katy !
